Why?

The hollow tin chirping of his phone alarm cut into his unconsciousness. Suddenly, there was cold air against the bare skin of his chest and cool surrendering carpet beneath his naked feet as the comforter fell across a still comatose Ellen. Groping the warm quietly vibrating frame of the machine that kept him breathing at night, he found the smooth button in the shape of a smile and turned it off. He felt for and found the simple plastic latch that released the straps holding his nasal mask to his face and un-tethered himself from the Continuous Positive Pressure Unit (CPaP).

The alarm finally silenced, his still blurry eyes scanned the darkened room for the now warm water bottle that would transform the metallic desert that was his mouth. A low moan wafted across the room as his wife shifted from her side to her back. Her right arm stretched out and her hand seemed to reach for the head board as she unconsciously relieved the muscle tension in her shoulder.

There it was. Bracing on the mattress, he reached across to retrieve the water bottle from its place on the head board. Lingering for one last appreciative glance at his sleeping wife's form, he lumbered in the general direction of the bathroom.
