The birth of christ When Augustus was the emperor of Rome, he ordered a great census. All the people had to return to the home of their fathers, to be counted. Along with the rest, Joseph, the carpenter and his bride, Mary travelled to Bethlehem, the city of their great ancestor King David. At the time of the journey, Mary was excepting a child. An angel had told her that his baby would one day become the bringer of hope to all the world. While Mary and Joseph were at Bethelem, the child his born. His brother wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn. In the hills nearby, there were shepherds watching over their flocks at night. An angel appeared to them, and said :Fear not, for I bring you news of great joy. Today a child has been born, who will be the deliverer of all mankind. You will find him in Bethlehem, lying inn a manager. When the shepherds found that all was as the angel had said, they praised God for the wonder that they had seen. Soon, a party of wise and learned men came out of the east to Jerusalem. Where is the child who is born to be greater than any king? They asked. We have seen his star in the sky. King Herod's men told them that ancient books named Bethlehem as the birth- place of the prince of peace. The wise men went to Bethlehem, the spot where the little Jesus Lay. They gave him rich gifts from the east- gold, frankincense and myrrh. One night, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. Rise up, and flee into the land of Egypt, for Herod will search for Jesus to destroy him. King Herod feared this child, who was born to be greater than kings. He sent his soldiers to look for Jesus.
