Story:relief in the depths

So it had happened aliens had finally arrived and made contact. Most surprising they came in peace, they wanted to help and they were alike us more than we had hoped. The day of contact was taken first as a hoax, then with fear then eventually with outright greed. Wars were started over who got to talk to them, who got first access to the new technology and who got to run the changed society that they these changes left behind.
Soon factories were pumping out earth to orbit shuttles as fast as they had once pumped out motor cars. Vast colonies were constructed throughout the solar system first by the governments and then soon by people wishing to escape the government. Small fiefdoms and kingdoms were formed because those who lived alone were prone to attack from others and those who banded together the strong rose to the top. Yet the limitless resources of the solar system were opened up as fast as humanity could expand to fill them. With the realisation that resources weren't a limit and birth rates plummeting wars began to resemble the slave trade where the only valuable thing was real humans. A kings worth was not the size of his kingdom or its gold, because they were worthless, the only currency, the only way to prove you were better was to collect people. And people were free to move, any citizen now had access to all the technology that had been provided so those who coveted power sought to deny them to those citizens through force and through religion. Many fled these regimes and many other were trapped, some came back to free them and some hid, content with their lot.
Time and society moved on and after a few centuries each free human could command forces beyond the dream of the entire human civilisation could have mustered before the aliens arrived. Governing individuals proved impossible as any repression that could be tried ended up with the individual able to escape. yet all humanity was trapped in the solar system, stuck around their parent star and light speed forbidding them from escaping. Yet some tried to escape, they commanded their colonies to build huge engines and took off outside of the home system. Some perished, some prospered and discovered the local systems empty of life of any discernible kind.
Centuries of travel to get to the nearest star systems in their self sufficient colonies proved hard, but no harder than the fights for survival either within the taxation of someone's empire or defending against pirate individuals. Settling in their new home solar system they built and they prospered until they discovered that something wasn't right. Experiments that had been done previously on Earth had different results, observations of energetic particles behaved differently to those recorded. Soon they had a faster than light drive built and made new contact with many new alien species across the galaxy and founded a new society. Their adopted solar system became the hub of the new galactic empire and yet throughout this earth was left alone, no FTL drive would work there, no matter how metropolitan the Sol system became it was always alone in the failure of the FTL technology.
And the new solar system carried on in its' strength and began to strip the planets in the system of their atmosphere and minerals in preference for orbital colonies where there was more space and easier commuting to the rest of the galaxy. Until one day it all changed, one poorly maintained engine on trying to bend space-time to travel to near the galactic core malfunctioned and disrupted space-time for light years around. No commerce was possible cut off from the rest of the galaxy like this. So they left their adopted home in search of a new home. They left their home where they had mined and stripped the planets and tried to leave no valuable part behind.
And on the planet below some life was left over in the ravaged atmosphere, though it would take millions of years, life would form here again and it would grow and learn, and maybe one day explore the stars itself.
