Help:Namespaces and Story Types

From WikiStory

Jump to: navigation, search

WikiStory is divided into large sections called "namespaces." Every page on the site is in a namespace. There are Writing Namespaces (see below), such as the "Poem" namespace or "Story" namespace. There are additional namespaces with other purposes, such as the "Help" namespace, in which all the pages for helping new authors and visitors use the site are located.

Pages without a prefix (not separated by a colon(:)) in their name are in the “Story” namespace.

The name of a page may contain a prefix preceding the name of a story (or other writing form), separated by a colon, as in “Poem:Sunset”. In this example, “Poem” is the namespace and “Sunset” is the title given to this work.

Within each namespace, pieces can be organized according to categories. Pieces from different namespaces can be put into the same category, as well.

What goes into each namespace is discussed below. If a story is in the wrong namespace, please ask an administrator to move it by marking it “in need of moving.”

Namespaces for Writings

The Story Namespace

If a story has no prefix, it is in the Story namespace (sometimes called the "main" namespace). Create a page in the story namespace for short stories, long stories, novels, books, or writing that does not fit in any other namespace.

Poem

Wikistory is not just for stories. You may compose poems as well. Put collaborative poems in the "Poem" namespace. (Solo poems go in the Author namespace.)

Plot

If you have a great idea for a plot, but do not want to or do not have time to write a whole story to accompany it, outline it in the Plot namespace. Here, authors craft plotlines without worrying about what language to use, as one would when writing part of a story. Write an outline for a story detailing major and minor plot points and structure.

Other authors can then take plotlines or part of plotlines from this namespace and create stories out of them.

Character

Perhaps you have come up with an exciting or interesting character, but haven't a story, setting, or plot in which to place him. Make a page for a character or set of characters. Authors can collaborate together to create engaging characters before developing the context or plot around them.

Author

The Author namespace has multiple purposes. Authors may put anything on their Author page without it being edited by other authors. This can be information about that author, pictures, and links to that author's favorite stories. Most importantly the Author can put on his Author Page stories for which he is the exclusive author. If you want to share your story with the world but not let others edit it and so keep control (and the copyright) for yourself exclusively, place your story on your Author page or an Author subpage. For more details see Help:Author_Stories.

Author Talk

The Author Talk namespace contains a discussion page for each author. (You can get to it by going to an Author page and clicking the "discussion" tab at the top.) Anyone may write on anyone's Author Talk page, not just their own, to allow feedback on the stories and messages to and from that Author.

If this page is edited, the next time that author logs in he will see a box notifying him that he has new messages.

The Talk Namespaces

Every namespace (and not just the ones discussed up to this point) aside from "Special" has an associated talk namespace. Each page, story, poem, plot, etc., has an associated talk page for discussing the page, story, poem, plot etc. On the talk namespace for namespaces intended for written work, you can usually find the guidelines for editing that work, if there are any, and any discussion about the page, including comments and ideas for improvement.

Reviews, however, should go in the Reviews namespace

Namespaces for using the Site

Wikistory

The WikiStory namespace contains information about WikiStory. It cannot be edited by the community, except for Administrators. Suggestions, comments, or requests pertaining to a particular WikiStory namespace page may be placed on a WikiStory Talk page.

Help

The Help namespace contains all of the pages designed to help you use Wikistory. Some Help pages (including Help:Contents and the pages to which it links) cannot be edited by the non-Administrator community, but anyone may create an additional Help page which can then be edited by all.

Category

The category namespace is used to organize the work on Wikistory. Authors can take any page in the Story, Poem, Plot, or Character namespaces and place it into a specific category. Pages in the category namespace display all the stories or writings that authors put into a particular category. To add a story to category "horror", for example, add "[[Category:horror]]" to the bottom of the page. You will then be able to view this story along with others in this category at Category:Horror.

Template

The Template namespace is for creating templates. These can be used to draw Administrator attention to a page, insert pre-formatted messages into pages, and more.

Special

The Special namespace is for pages that perform a special function. These include the Special:Recentchanges page and the Special:Userlogin page.
