Help:Author page

From WikiStory

Jump to: navigation, search
(Certain parts of this page, marked in its source, is/are in the public domain.)

An Author Page is a page about a WikiStory member; someone who has joined the WikiStory community. You can put personal (non-collaborative) writing there. It is also acceptable to join WikiStory without being a writer. Even if you are not writing stories, poems, plots, or character descriptions yourself, you may wish to have the ability to communicate on the Talk pages or tell the community about yourself on an Author page. You will be able to do this by creating an account on WikiStory.

If you have registered, you can create your own Author page. Your Author page is linked in the top right of every page. Your Author page is your own personal space which only you can edit (anyone can write on your talk page, however).

Others will see links to your Author page from various places which assist in collaboration. This includes the 'Recent changes' and page 'history' displays (See Help:Tracking changes). You can also link to your author page within text of a wiki page, which is mainly useful on talk pages when you sign your name.

What to put on your user page

About yourself

You can think of this space as a 'profile' page. It is a feature to help other people know who you are, and to bring the WikiStory community closer together. (You are not required to write anything about yourself, of course; you may remain as anonymous as you like.) You could mention where you are from, what your job is. You might want to talk about your reading and writing habits, and what stories, poems, etc., you have contributed to on WikiStory.

Author Stories

While the purpose of WikiStory is to allow for untold numbers of authors to collaborate to create fantastic stories, we recognize that you may also want to refine your skill at writing alone and use WikiStory as a vehicle to publicize, share, and receive feedback on your work.

You may place stories, poems, plots, and character descriptions on your Author page. Anything on your author page or subpage of your Author page will not be able to be edited by other members. You may wish to write multiple stories under different headers or organize using subpages.

You may comment on these stories, poems, plots, or character descriptions on the Author Talk page, and review them using the "Reviews" tab as you would any other story.

Using Subpages

You may organize Author Stories by using subpages. For example, you could put different stories on their own subpages and link to them from your main Author Page. For details on how to use subpages, see Help:Subpages.

You may use subpages for any purpose, of course, in addition to putting a story, poem, plot, or character description on them.

scratchpad / development area

You may use your author page as a scratchpad. An area for developing ideas without cluttering the content namespaces. You can experiment with formatting or jot down notes for yourself.

Anything you want

Finally, anything else you wish to put in your user pages is fine. It is your space, enjoy it!

Changing the Style (Look and Feel, CSS) of your page

You can change the style of how your particular page appears to others. You will need to know CSS (a web scripting language) in order to do this, however.

You may create your own authorstyle by editing the article:

Author:Username/style.css

Where 'Username' is the name of the author.

An author's style.css will affect the author's page "[[Author:Username]]" as well as any subpages (such as [[Author:Username/some/subpage]]).

Members in the 'Administrator' group are able to see pages as they are normally, without the styles.

Also, these styles will not show up when viewing any Authorspace pages which end in .css or .js.

Other people's Author pages

As mentioned above, you will see links to other people's Author pages, in various places throughout the site.

Author Contributions

When viewing another person's Author page, an additional link "author contributions" appears in the 'toolbox' area (bottom left). This takes you to a list of all of this author's edits. Use this to get an idea of how prolific a contributor somebody is, or to track down edits made by an author who is causing trouble/making bad edits.

Editing someone else's page

You are not able to edit others' Author pages, and they are not able to edit yours. (The exception to this is that Administrators are able to edit anyone's author page if the need arises.)

If you feel something should be changed on an Author's page, tell them on the talk page.

If an author has put something offensive on his Author page and is not responding to complaints on the talk page, please contact an Administrator.

Author talk pages

Every author page has an associated talk page: an "Author Talk page". This is a special kind of talk page for leaving messages directed at a particular author. See Help:Talk pages#Author Talk pages.
